The Foundation is partnering with FWC, NOAA, The Florida Aquarium, Nova Southeastern University, and many others to rescue the finest remaining examples of 16 species of corals vulnerable to stony coral tissue loss disease (SCTLD), which first appeared near the port of Miami in late 2014. SCTLD is killing a high proportion of brain, boulder, pillar, and star corals, the literal and ecological backbone of the entire reef. These rescued corals will be bred for maximum genetic diversity and disease resistance before being replanted by the tens of thousands onto Florida’s 360 miles of reefs.
